September: Secretary of the Air Force Verne Orr directed that qualified women be allowed to choose the security specialist career field, ruling that this action would not violate the law excluding women from combat. Under Orr's ruling, A1C Virginia L. Queen, an Air National Guardsman, became the first female secuirty specialist student on 18 January 1985, graduating on 4 March (women had entered the security specialist field for a brief period in 1977-78).
